Tweeting from outer space!

23 January 2010 No Comment

You can now use your Twitter account and tweet live directly from outer space - if you plan to make it to outer space anytime soon, that is!

On Friday, Timothy J Creamer, an astronaut from NASA sent the first ever Tweet from outer space. This was made possible after a software upgrade that NASA made enabling astronauts to connect wirelessly to the web - something that NASA calls “the ultimate wireless connection”.

Creamer’s first tweet will be remembered for a long time, atleast by future astronauts who have to work long term in space.  As NASA spokesman Kelly Humphries says, “Long-duration astronauts, they commit to spending months away from family and friends. It’s a pretty unique state of isolation.  We expect this to enhance morale and productivity.

The space station crew can connect from an onboard laptop to a desktop placed at Mission Control to browse the web. This is a huge step for NASA, considering that previously space flight crew had to email messages down to Earth from where the ground crew would post them to the respective places online (Twitter or anywhere else).
